Eccles' 2001 Tin Can Report
The
rain, which looked threatening, luckily held off on
this the tenth anniversary of the Tin Can Ten. A strong
wind however kept most of the competitors times
slightly back, though not appreciably so for our quick
men. Paul Vincent produced a storming 26:38 which was
enough to prise the Trophy off Tony Pages mantelpiece
and prevent him gaining the hat-trick. The last time
these two met was in 1999 when Tony had the edge. It
was interesting to note that both riders were using
the TF two-speed gear on this occasion, though their
approach to the gearing was quite different: Tony admitted
to pitching the top gear a little too high for the conditions
(also confessed to not having ridden a TT since last
year) whereas Paul opted for using top gear all the
way round! In between was another past winner Chris
Thompson who held the Trophy in 1995. Incidentally in
the brief history of the Tin Can the best time for the
course was that of Scot Gamble in 1995, at 25:21.
But
of course the Tin Can is not to do with winning, but
rather with lots of other things. The contents of Ann
Danvers shopping basket for instance. Or Mike
Christys magnificent Victorian front driver compared
with Andrew Tokeleys small wheel folder. Or Minorus
low profile contrasted with Paul Vincents, which
was originally built for Tony Doyle and not really designed
for going round corners. After the Crypto gear in Mike
Christys wheel the oldest hub must have been Tony
Bushs A-type Sturmey, dated 1914. Gamely pushing
his machine over the finish line, John Doran must have
thought his hub was behaving more like Jeffrey Archer
than Sturmey-Archer.For
all those interested in the dates of machinery you may
like to know that the 10th Anniversary Certificates
were printed on an Albion hand-press of 1868; we are
very grateful to Ray Booty, John Woodburn and Michael
Hutchinson for generously entering into the Tin Can
spirit and signing them for us.
We
are all greatly indebted to the Loughborough Phoenix
for once again hosting this event and for providing
all the necessary back-up, from the time-keeping through
to the superb tea spread. None of this could happen
without the L/P, so many thanks to all concerned.
We
hope you will join us again for some epicyclic celebrations
next year. If you are keen on lightweights and classic
bike competition you may like to know that there is
to be another Eastway series of races in London on Sunday
2nd September (Patrick Trench 020 8527 2332
organising).
Finally: a Swiss Army knife was found in the lay-by
on Saturday. If anyone has lost this they should call
David Eccles on 020 8673 5026. |
